Our Technology

Picture

Controllers that Mimic Actual Instruments

Our system uses specially designed input "forceps" that look, feel, and respond like actual microsurgery forceps. The forceps are tracked with seven degrees of freedom (x, y, z, pitch, yaw, roll, apposition) at sub-millimeter precision, and they are used to control virtual microsurgery instruments in a virtual surgical field.

The specific instrument controlled by each forceps is software selectable, providing the user with a full complement of microsurgery tools that can grasp and manipulate virtual objects such as tissue, needles, or sutures.

3D Visualization

An active stereoscopic display presents the simulation in 3D, emulating the depth perception experienced when looking through an actual surgical microscope while also allowing multiple simultaneous observers for group instruction.

Simulated Knot Tying

Suture manipulation and knot tying is the key to any microsurgery procedure, and it is one of the most technically demanding surgical tasks. With our simulator, it is possible to practice these foundational skills using a realistic suture and substrate.
